Concerned about leaking PageRank from the links on your web pages?

As of 18th January 2005, Google, together with other search engines like MSN Search, is recognising a new attribute to the anchor tag. The attribute is "rel", and it is used as follows (I am using standard brackets rather than angle brackets to avoid any formatting problems):

(a href="http://www.domain.com/somepage.html" rel="nofollow")link text(/a)

The attribute tells Google to ignore the link completely. The link won't help the target page's PageRank, and it won't help its rankings. It is as though the link doesn't exist. With this attribute, there is no longer any need for javascript, forms, or any other method of hiding links from Google.

For a few months now the personal side of
my life has taken over from the professional side.
Sometimes it's easy to get so lost in your work or 'what
you do', that you forget about the people that mean most to
you, and you lose sight of your priorities.

My four-year old daughter will soon be at school, and my
two year old boy is growing up fast too - and you never get

you can send out promotional material on autopilot without
lifting a finger, thanks to the beauty of autoresponders.

Sure, it takes a little bit of hard work upfront - or more
often, a huge amount of nose-to-the-grindstone sweat and
toil for several months (otherwise known as 'commitment'
and 'motivation') - but your investment of time and energy
is more often than not well worth it.

I've just received one of my first Google WebAlerts (click the link above to set up your own), and it let me know of a new link Google had found to one of my web sites.

Here's what I did (so you know how to do the same).

I entered 'popupmaster.com' as the term I wanted to track, clicked the button, and confirmed the email to set it up.

The first alert I received on this was along the following lines:

So, using this method I can for example know when a web site is using one of my articles - and in this case they were using it without the proper resource box, and therefore in breach of my republishing guidelines, so I've chased it up with them and requested their immediate compliance.

So straight away, Google WebAlerts is proving useful to my business.

Google appear to have launched a new service that allows you to, for example, find out when people link to your site, keep an eye on competitors, and so on. Could be useful so I'm just testing it out to see what they send you.

Obviously the idea of this for Google is to take advantage of the popularity of the site GoogleAlert by offering a similar service of their own - GoogleAlert is in the top 12000 on Alexa, mainly one would guess due to word of mouth advertising (that's how I came across them myself), so you can't blame Google for wanting some of the action.
